Last Month..... Minutes from the last meeting: the Heritage Dinner was a huge success. Harambee would like to thank everyone for all of their hard work and preparation.

This Month......
At this meeting there was a discussion about having a “Sunday dinner” style meal over to Patricia’s. The event was to be held on Friday April 13th, but was moved to Thursday April 12th at 5:30 pm.

The rites of passage ceremony will be on May 3rd 2007. The group has secured money for the stoles. All students of African descent are invited to participate and wear stoles regardless of their involvement (or lack thereof) with Harambee. Jeremy McKay will send the list of all black students to Sheila Glenn asap. There will be food and entertainment (via donations). This will be the last time to pick up your Harambee shirt for the semester. Sheila is in charge of this committee

The Heritage Dinner
-Harambee is responsible for proofing the text for the invitation and guest list, Jeremy volunteered to do this for the group
-AAD giving around 3,000
-Guest list needed to be to Leila in the Alumni office, like yesterday :(
-Faculty club group: food=Shelia, and Jonathan, flowers and other=Q, AudioVisual=Afiya
-program already in place for this event: Gomes keynote, some alums will speak, a current student will speak
-the main goal of this meeting is to set up a mentoring program between te alums and current students
-Shaundra will get the invitations from Leila and put them in boxes
-estimated number of people to attend event: 65

Let’s Pull Together!
In this issue...a special spotlight on Enoch Gbadegesin, Lauren Summers, and Jonathan Wilkins, minutes from the last meeting, information on updated contact information for Harambee members, updates, and much more.

Kwanzaa at HDS
Harambee would like to thank everyone for coming out last Thursday and celebrating our heritage at Kwanzaa. The highlights of the festival included a focus on the black power movement, clips of speeches from the movement, impromptu dancing, the distribution of Harambee Tshirts, introspective conversation, drumming, an African dance performance, candle-lighting, and a special selection from our own Reverend Enoch.

There will also be a Black Heritage Dinner in February. Shaundra and Terri will be main administrators, Dr. Best will be history presentation, and there will hopefully be AAD (BAN) collaboration.
In the time between now and the next meeting please meet and make plans for the alloted events. If you would like to volunteer and are not signed up please email tcisse@hds.harvard.edu

Spotlights....
Spotlight on Enoch Gbadegesin. Congratulations to Enoch Gbadegesin! He successfully presented his paper at the AAR conference this semester. The topic was on religion in Nigeria. Please contact him for more information or to read his paper. egbadegesin@hds.harvard.edu

Spotlight on Lauren Summers. Lauren presented a paper on gender and religion at a Harvard Divinity School Community talk given by Dr. Wallace Best. Congrats to her and to Dr. Best. Because of miscommunication on behalf of Harambee, the black turn out was low. We would like to formally apologize for this, as we will strive to attend and publicize more events in the future. :)

Spotlight on Jonathan Wilkins. This month Jonathan was officially launched into ministry as he conducted his trial sermon at Union Baptist Church in Central Square in Cambridge. Congrats and good luck in your future endeavors!

This Month...... Minutes from the last meeting: Dicsussion was centered around various issue of race at HDS specifically in regards to the administrative blunders behind the Cone lecture, the lack of discussion about race in classes, and the feeling that the Div school is disconnected from the rest of the university. Afiya volunteered to draft a letter to the dean to express that concern, and will be the focus of the next meeting, along with planning for Kwanzaa and other events.

Minutes from the October Meeting

Last Month..... AAD (Formerly the BAN Black Alumni Network) Dinner Fall 2006: was a great success! Thanks to everyone for coming and for their hard work.
Harambee Freedom Trail Tour of Boston: is yet to be rescheduled.

This Month...... Minutes from the last meeting: The annual Kwanzaa celebration will be held on either December 7th or December 14th at 6pm. Jeremy will be the MC, and Afiya will do the decorations.
On February 21st, Harambee will be in charge of Noon Service- theme: Black History Month. Afiya and Lauren will create the plan of the service, Afiya will do decorations, Shaundra will help plan and be the administrator, Jeremy will MC, and Reverend Enoch will also help plan and possibly preach.
There will also be a Black Heritage Dinner In February. Shaundra and Terri will be main administrators, Dr. Best will be history presentation, and there will be AAD (BAN) collaboration.

Overview: Q is going to do a fiery speach similar to noon service, reading, etc. Shelia Glenn is going to do the benediction. Bernadette, Afiya and Jeremy are doing registration beginning at 9:15 am. Come with questions for discussion for the section about careers after HDS, led by Career services. Plan to attend the BAN lunch, good networking event. Get flyers from Terri. Harambee Participation is key, because this year we did not have to plan the event alone. :)

II.Discussion of Harambee Contribution to Hurricane Katrina Project

This black History Month, we have many things planned including the Noon Service on Feb 22, The Wallace Best Lecture on Feb 28 at 5:30pm right after The Black History Month community Tea at 4:30pm that same day. Wear Harambee Tshirts :).

Discussion:
The past discussion at Renita's house focusing on the Ethical Issues of Black Leadership, was really deep and got exciting and heated at some moments: Gotta love Black people. Make sure to check out the next one.

Planning for Community Tea:

Black History Month Noon Service

The event will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2006 at (you guessed it) noon.
Harambee members are expected to arrive at 11:30am to help set up and be at the practice on Tuesday evening (email Enesha for details). The theme for the service, in line with the Div School celebration of women, is:

"Remembering Women in the Struggle"
The service is dedicated to the named and unnamed women that participated in the struggle for black rights.
In Remembrance of:
Septima Clark, Alberta Williams King, Bernice Scott, Daisy May Bates, Ella Baker, Billie Jean young, Mary McLeod Bethune, Constance Baker Motley, Margie Pitts-Haines, Bertha Mae Carter, Rosa Parks, Ethel Mae Mathews, Dorothy Bolton, Fannie Lou Hamer, Coretta Scott King, Shirley Chisholm, Betty Shabazz, Victoria Way DeLee, Clara Muhammad, Ruby Doris Smith Robinson, Ida B. Wells, Anne Julia Cooper, Alice Dunbar Nelson, and many more....

The service will include drumming, remarks, slide presentations, prayers for the community, a segment to remember our ancestors, singing of the black national anthem, and you can't forget refreshments (the good ones)!!

Retracing the Struggle

“ Retracing the Struggle: Harambee at Harvard Divinity participated in city wide march reenacting the historic march to Selma.

Rain or shine, Sunday October 30, 2005 was to be a monumental day for the city of Boston. Members of Harambee at Harvard Divinity were determined to be apart of the reenactment of the historic march to Selma set to manifest itself in Boston as a march from Roxbury to the Boston Common. The day began with a rally at the First Church in Roxbury with local speakers and performers, and concluded with remarks by Sen. John Kerry and Rep. John Lewis, from Georgia.

The march to the common was layered with the singing of songs from the civil rights era, smiles and honks from passing cars, and ideal weather (especially due to the fact that it snowed the day before!) Harambee Harvard Divinity Students led the singing of “Marching to Zion,” and held signs as they marched. The march concluded with another speech by John Lewis and a reminder of upcoming local elections, and issues concerning the coming expiration of the Voting Rights Act in the US congress. Are you a "sell out"?

“Selling out”
Harambee at Harvard Divinity candid discussion about what it is, and what it means within the black community.

On Friday October 28, 2005 members of Harambee at Harvard Divinity got together for a candid discussion about a complex issue in the black community, “Selling out.” In an informal and cozy environment off campus (at the house of the vice president, Renita Moore) several members wrestled with the issue, proposed solutions, and ate good food. Here are the highlights…

The discussion began with the basics- the attempt to define selling out. From there the topics ranged from a self reflective perspective asking the question whether we were sellouts, who are sell outs in general, the politics surrounding interracial dating and being seen as a sell out, the mega-church dynamic, and issues of class.

Also issues about tensions surrounding nationality, African Americans, and immigrants of African descent were brought to the table. The discussion was thick and deep. Without being said, all communities have issues. This discussion series gave the opportunity to discuss them in depth and offer suggestions.

But the discussion does not end there…it continues on this blog what do you think?

Black administrative issues:
Black Faculty are leaving, and not being replaced.
Are their positions are being elivated? It seems that there is no clear agenda to alieve the situation.
How to react to black perspective students, when the school is not minority friendly.
Theological education day was today, November 4, 2005. This is where tours of the campus and classes, so perspective students can get a feel for the school.
A loss of money for black students groups due to lack of black professors (money tied to professions, etc).
The administration is defunding ministerial staff and ministerial events. Mdiv has become more academic.

Main questions:
What are the main issues, administrative issues, are blacks repersented?
Is there black support?
Do we have to do the leg work?
Should we be doing more about actual recruitment?

The decision that needs to be made:
Do we work to recruit more blacks?
or Do we leave and let the funds leave with us so there will financial sting and possibly a interal change in strategy?
